Who Can Benefit From Laser Resurfacing?

Fractional laser resurfacing is optimal for individuals with facial lines, wrinkles, scars, spots, or sun damage they wish to treat. It is not recommended for individuals under the age of 16 to undergo laser treatment for facial rejuvenation, but it can be safe to treat scars and certain birthmarks in this age group.

People with sensitive skin, or those prone to vitiligo, keloid scars, psoriasis, or scleroderma, should avoid this treatment. Additionally, those with brown or deep skin tones are more at risk for melasma or hyperpigmentation, whereas those with fair to medium skin tones typically tolerate the procedure well. It's also important to avoid laser treatments if you are on medications that increase light sensitivity or have taken Accutane within the previous 12 months. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also avoid this treatment as there aren't conclusive studies regarding its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

    How does Resurfacing?

The resurfacing treatment procedure is designed to target and reduce pigmentation issues such as melasma, age spots, acne scars, sugging skin, wrinkles. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how the procedure typically works:

    1. Consultation:
    - Before the treatment, you’ll have a consultation with a skin care professional. They will assess your skin type, discuss your concerns, and determine if Resurfacing is suitable for you.

    2. Preparation:
    - On the day of the treatment, make sure when you come you don’t have a tan on your skin. An anestesia cream may be applied to enhance comfort.

    3. Eye Protection:
    - Protective eyewear will be provided to shield your eyes from the bright light emitted during the procedure.

    4. Treatment Application:
    - The practitioner will use a handheld device to the affected areas of your skin.
    - You may feel a mild sensation, often described as a slight tingling or a rubber band snap against your skin.

    5. Duration and costs:
    - The treatment session typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. The costs €380 for all face.

    6. Post-Treatment Care:
    - After the procedure, you may experience some redness or slight swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, which usually subsides within a few hours.
    - The practitioner will provide aftercare instructions, which may include avoiding sun exposure, using sunscreen, and moisturizing your skin.

    7. Results:
    - Many patients see improvements in their skin tone and structure after just one session. The treatment stimulates collagen production, resulting in clearer, more even skin over time.

    8. Recovery period:
    - You can continue your usual life using a sun protection cream. Skin will not peel.

    Expected Results Of Laser Resurfacing

Most people see smoother skin within a few weeks post-procedure, and results continue to improve for up to six months. Fractional laser treatments are known for producing significant results even after a single session, especially in the treatment of acne scars, age spots, and wrinkles.

    Healing Process
The healing process depends on the intensity of the treatment. Typically, most people experience swelling and redness for up to 2-3 days, with the skin looking and feeling mostly healed by day six or seven. Cold compresses and sleeping with the head elevated can help alleviate discomfort and reduce swelling during this time.

    Contraindications and Precautions

Fractional laser treatments should not be used during active herpes infections or on injured or superinfected skin. It is also important to inform the provider if you have allergies or hypersensitivity to certain ingredients.
Those with a history of skin cancer should avoid the treatment, although lasers can be used to improve scars once the cancer has been removed. Additionally, people with conditions that rapidly increase collagen production (such as scleroderma) should avoid the procedure. Medications that cause increased light sensitivity, such as Retin-A or certain acne antibiotics, are contraindications. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to the lack of conclusive studies regarding safety.

Pros and Cons of Laser Resurfacing

    Pros:
    1. Can treat acne scars, age spots, and wrinkles with significant results often seen after a single session.
    2. Typical downtime is less than a week, which is shorter and easier compared to fully ablative lasers.
    3. Most fractional lasers have a continuous cooling mechanism to improve comfort and reduce the risk of burns.
    4. There is less risk of complications such as scarring and pigmentary changes compared to fully ablative lasers.

    Cons:
    1. People with severe pitted acne scars may need more than one treatment for satisfactory results.
    2. Sun exposure must be avoided for at least 2-3 week after treatment, and sunscreen must be applied diligently.
    3. Some fractional lasers are not recommended for people with olive or brown skin due to the risk of developing melasma or other types of hyperpigmentation.

    Possible Side Effects

Like any medical procedure, there are potential side effects, which may include mild redness, swelling, and temporary darkening of pigmented lesions. These side effects are generally short-lived, and patients can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
