Transforming Your Skin and Your Life: The Effective Approach of Acne Laser Treatment
You've just bought that beautiful new evening dress, with matching shoes. Everything is ready for the party you've been looking forward to for weeks. But then it happens: you look in the mirror and suddenly there is a bright red spot, right in the middle of your forehead.

Fortunately, you have your trusted makeup to save the evening. But for 5% of adult women and 1% of adult men, things are more complicated. They have a chronic skin condition: acne. They regularly experience outbreaks of spots, blackheads and sometimes deeper inflammation, such as cysts.
The difference between a spot and acne
Anyone can get an occasional spot, regardless of age or skin type. These spots usually develop when pores become temporarily blocked by sebum, dead skin cells or bacteria. The skin between spots generally looks healthy, without widespread redness, inflammation or scarring. The spot disappears on its own.
People with acne regularly develop new outbreaks. These mainly occur on the face, back, chest and shoulders. Acne is often accompanied by persistent redness and inflammation. Without proper treatment, scars or pigmentation spots can develop. Different types of lesions, such as blackheads, whiteheads and cysts, often occur at the same time.
Acne is mainly associated with puberty and adolescence because of the significant hormonal changes during this period. Testosterone in particular stimulates sebum production. This is why boys often experience more acne than girls.
In adult women, hormonal fluctuations play an important role. These include the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, certain hormonal contraceptives and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, also known as PCOS. This makes acne more common in adult women than adult men.
The different types of acne
Not all acne is the same. Causes and treatments differ by type. The most common form is called acne vulgaris. This can include whiteheads, blackheads, red bumps and spots with a white head.
Two other common types are comedonal acne and inflammatory acne. Comedonal acne mainly involves many whiteheads and blackheads, with little or no inflammation. Inflammatory acne causes red, inflamed bumps and spots.
A rarer but more severe type is cystic acne. This involves deep, painful, inflamed cysts and nodules beneath the skin's surface. This type can leave scars.
Two other rare and serious types are acne conglobata and acne fulminans. In acne conglobata, large areas of inflammation and cysts can become interconnected. This almost always leads to noticeable scars. Acne fulminans is a sudden, severe form often accompanied by fever and joint pain. This last type is extremely rare.
There are also three types that are usually milder and less directly connected to sebum production. Behaviour and psychological factors can play a role.
Acne mechanica can develop from pressure, friction or heat on the skin. This form occurs in athletes, for example.
Cosmetics can also cause acne. This usually mild form is called acne cosmetica.
Finally, acne excoriée can develop or worsen when you frequently scratch or pick at spots, for example due to stress or anxiety.
Possible causes of acne
Acne can have different causes. Some can be addressed. For others, treatment mainly focuses on symptoms.
When you have little influence over the development of acne
Hereditary factors can play an important role. If adult acne runs in your family, you are more likely to experience it too. There is little you can do to change that predisposition.
Certain medications can also cause acne as a side effect. Examples include some corticosteroids, antidepressants and epilepsy medications.
When you can sometimes influence the development of acne
Hormonal fluctuations play a major role. In women, changes around menstruation, pregnancy, certain contraceptives or PCOS can trigger or worsen acne.
When you can usually influence the development of acne
Some cosmetics and skincare products can block pores or irritate the skin. They can therefore contribute to acne.
Lifestyle factors such as stress, diet and smoking can also influence the development or worsening of acne.

The physical and emotional effects of acne
Because acne itself is not dangerous to health, many people see it as a minor inconvenience. But they do not speak to the people I meet every day at our natural beauty clinic, Beauty & Mind in Amsterdam.
Depending on the severity of their symptoms, people with acne can experience considerable physical and emotional difficulties.
Physical effects
Severe forms of acne, such as nodular or cystic acne, can cause permanent scars if not treated properly.
Hyperpigmentation can also occur: dark marks left after inflammation. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and is particularly common in people with darker skin.
Psychological and emotional effects
Acne can affect your self-image and confidence. This can influence personal relationships and social interactions.
Some people avoid social situations because of their skin. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. There is also a clear connection between acne and mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety.
