Eliminate Eye Wrinkles with Laser Resurfacing

I was recently at a restaurant with some friends. We were recalling old stories and laughing heartily about our shared experiences. But one friend kept her face expressionless, as if our funny stories meant nothing to her. She stared indifferently ahead.

I wondered whether something was going on at home, or whether she might not be feeling well. So I sat next to her and asked if everything was okay.

“Just leave me be for a moment, or I'll burst out laughing!” she replied softly.

Surprised, I asked: “But why don't you want to laugh?”

“Because my laugh lines and crow's feet will get worse!”

It's something we all face sooner or later: wrinkles around the eyes, also known as crow's feet, laugh lines at the corners of the mouth, and those familiar frown lines.

Even when you use moisturising creams and serums containing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, retinol and vitamin C, wrinkles eventually form. In women, this often happens earlier than in men, because women's skin is generally thinner and they undergo hormonal changes.

How do facial wrinkles form?

Unlike many other muscles in the body, many facial muscles are directly attached to the skin. This allows us to make hundreds of different facial expressions to communicate.

But every time we do this, the muscles pull on the skin. Over time, this contributes to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

The delicate skin around the eyes is also naturally more susceptible to the effects of skin ageing. With an average thickness of just 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres, it is among the thinnest skin on the entire body.

The skin around the eyes also has fewer sebaceous glands than the rest of the face. This means it is naturally less well hydrated, making it easier for lines to form.

But perhaps the biggest influence on wrinkles around the eyes and across the face is that we laugh, frown and blink all day long. You can try to stop yourself, as my friend did, but it isn't very effective. And it doesn't make your day any more enjoyable either.

Wrinkles caused by laughing and smiling

When you smile genuinely, with the outer corners of your eyes moving too, this is called a Duchenne smile.

The circular muscle around the eye, the orbicularis oculi, contracts. Crow's feet form where this muscle pulls on the skin.

Wrinkles caused by frowning

The forehead muscle, the frontalis, is mainly used to raise your eyebrows. Its fibres work together with those of the circular muscle around the eye, allowing you to make different facial expressions.

The forehead muscle is also connected to the musculus corrugator supercilii: the small eyebrow muscle between the eyes and the nose. This helps you frown and contributes to movements of the eyebrows and squinting, for example in bright sunlight.

These three muscles work together to produce different facial expressions. Because we use them hundreds of times a day, they also contribute to wrinkles and lines under the eyes.

Wrinkles caused by blinking and winking

Two things happen when we blink. First, the circular muscle around the eye contracts to close the eye. Then the levator palpebrae, the muscle that raises the upper eyelid, lifts the eyelid again.

We blink an average of fifteen to twenty times a minute. Over a whole day, that adds up to thousands of times. Each time, mild tension is placed on the skin around the eyes.

We can suppress frowning and laughing to some extent. Blinking, however, is an automatic reflex that is essential for healthy eyes. It is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which works independently of our conscious control. This reflex helps keep the eyes moist and remove irritants.

What can you do about wrinkles around the eyes?

Various professional treatments can significantly reduce wrinkles around the eyes or even make them disappear completely.

One treatment with which we achieve particularly good results at Beauty & Mind in Amsterdam is laser resurfacing with our Stellar M22 device.

Laser resurfacing has been used for several decades. During that time, the technology has developed and improved considerably. This makes it one of the safest and most effective ways to rejuvenate the skin and treat wrinkles around the eyes without surgery.

How does laser resurfacing with Stellar M22 work?

The skin consists of several layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous connective tissue.

Each layer has its own structure and function. Together, they protect the body from external influences, help regulate temperature and allow us to feel touch and other sensations.

Laser resurfacing primarily targets the epidermis and dermis. The treatment stimulates skin rejuvenation by promoting collagen production. This reduces wrinkles and improves skin texture and elasticity.

The laser's penetration depth can vary from 0.3 to 1.5 millimetres. The temperature is carefully adjusted for optimal effectiveness and safety. The principle is that the heat is sufficient to stimulate the skin without damaging it.

The treatment uses a built-in cooling system to prevent overheating and keep the experience comfortable.

Laser resurfacing with Stellar M22 is an advanced method that uses light energy to heat the treatment areas precisely. This stimulates the formation of new tissue and the skin's natural renewal processes.

As a result, skin texture, elasticity and appearance improve without damaging the epidermis. The treatment is suitable for all skin types, virtually painless and requires no special aftercare. Improvements are often visible after just one session.
